The Battle of Adwa
Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II inflicted a decisive defeat on the invading Italian army, preserving Ethiopian sovereignty at the height of Europe's colonial expansion into Africa.
By the 1890s, European powers had colonized nearly the entire African continent in what's often called the 'Scramble for Africa.' Italy, seeking to expand from its colony of Eritrea, invaded Ethiopia, believing an earlier treaty gave it a protectorate over the country.
Emperor Menelik II mobilized an army drawn from across Ethiopia's regions and had spent years acquiring modern European rifles and artillery through diplomacy and trade, arming his forces on more even footing than most colonial powers expected.
At Adwa, Ethiopian forces decisively defeated the invading Italian army, forcing Italy to recognize full Ethiopian independence — the only sustained, successful African military resistance to European colonization during this era.
